Kelvin Okafor is a British artist born in London in 1985, celebrated for his highly detailed graphite and charcoal portraiture. His work goes beyond physical likeness to explore presence, identity and human connection. He studied Art and Design at City & Guilds Art School before graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Middlesex University.

Drawing has been central to Okafor’s life since childhood. His fascination with the pencil began at around the age of eight and developed into a deeply meditative practice. Working through an intensive process of observation and gradual construction, he often creates a portrait in sections, studying individual features before bringing them together as a whole. The slow nature of this process allows him to look beyond surface appearance and consider the emotional presence, lived experience and individuality of each sitter.

Okafor describes his practice as “Emotional Realism.” Although his drawings are renowned for their technical precision, realism is not the destination of his work. Instead, detail becomes a means of encounter: an invitation to look more closely, remain with another person and recognise the humanity that exists beyond first impressions.

This philosophy lies at the heart of Drawing Awareness, Okafor’s ongoing body of work exploring visible difference, identity and our shared humanity. Through large-scale portraits and the personal voices of the people represented, the project draws attention to experiences including vitiligo, burns, albinism, arteriovenous malformation and scarring. Sitters have included Winnie Harlow, Seal, Nikki Lilly, Katie Piper, Catrin Pugh and others. The work does not seek sympathy, but instead creates space for each person to be encountered on their own terms.

Drawing Awareness has been presented in London and internationally, including a major solo presentation at Hope 93 Gallery in Fitzrovia in 2025 and a presentation in Paris later that year. In 2026, the project was exhibited alongside other works from Okafor’s practice at Beecher’s Gallery in Herefordshire. His work has also taken him to Nigeria, where in 2025 he completed and unveiled a commissioned portrait of Professor Benedict Oramah for Afreximbank before an audience of thousands in Abuja.

Alongside his studio practice, Okafor is committed to education, artistic exchange and the development of emerging artists. Through the Kelvin Okafor Academy and in-person workshops, he teaches the observational and technical processes behind his drawing practice while encouraging artists to develop patience, sensitivity and their own visual language. His recent teaching and public engagement have included workshops and talks in the United Kingdom, Italy and Nigeria.

Okafor’s work and journey have been featured by major international media, including the BBC and CNN Style. In 2026, he has also taken on prominent roles within the wider arts community, including serving as an invited selector for the ING Discerning Eye exhibition and as a judge for the British Art Prize.

Across portraiture, exhibitions, education and collaboration, Okafor’s practice remains rooted in a simple belief: that sustained attention can transform the way we see one another. His work asks the viewer to move beyond appearance, assumptions and labels, and to encounter the individual with greater curiosity, compassion and presence.

“I love to draw faces. Each face, to me, tells an intriguing story regardless of age, gender, race or background. In the process of putting pencil to paper, I begin by drawing in sections and stages. I visually dissect facial features, study them, and then bring them back together like pieces in a puzzle. This method helps me understand expression and appreciate the lengthy, meditative process each portrait requires.”
