Carolyn Sheather

Carolyn Sheather is a well known and celebrated Australian artist known for her beautifully rendered creations, with a clear eye for discovering the magic in each moment. She describes her style as Contemporary Realism and honours her subjects by capturing the essence and summarising the most important elements, like gestures and characteristics, often elevating their status by playing with eye levels.

She draws, paints, designs and sculpts often with media made by herself. She draws inspiration from travel sketching and noticing the new, animals antics and their gracious forgiveness…and the stillness of architecture and still life.

Her creative practice includes oils, acrylics, watercolour, inks, clay and drawing mediums, with works now held in private collections around the world. Her work has been featured in the Australian Artist Magazine twice, she’s held numerous solo and group exhibitions and been awarded several Artist in Residencies.

Since 2011 Carolyn has taught and studied in Germany, Argentina, the Greek Islands, Italy, Sicily and France, her travel sketching tours and painting workshops are internationally valued.

This award winning Artist and passionate Tutor loves sharing her time worn art practices and success to those who will benefit the most. Her enthusiasm and experience are resources she offers whole heartedly in a friendly, supportive environment. She will do what it takes to assure you understand the next step for your evolution as an artist. She takes the time…

With over 3 decades of teaching experience, privately in seasonal schools and local art groups, and facilitating art internationally she still says she’s “learning to paint like a poet, and not a reporter”.

Workshop description

This Workshop will teach you how to choose what to sketch, how to set achievable sketching goals, how to capture the important parts with a few lines and how to put the first marks down.

We’ll begin with Supplies, Setups and Starts. You’ll develop strategies for simplifying complex scenes into a few lines, layers, shapes or colours, and have the confidence to include space on the page. You’ll leave room to balance your images, areas to decorate and fields to write notes about the subject. Confidence will grow: Each line, each experiment, each mis-take, each doodle will teach you that it’s 'good enough' for now!

We’ll continue with Tricks, Tips & Techniques. Sketching teaches us to see things differently, to see in layers and details…from the overall shapes and tones, to how the light looks on a vast array of colours. No matter the subject matter…no matter the experience level, I always say “Draw what draws you!"

Sketchbooks are a safe space for exploration where you can play…make mistakes and be completely free to mess things up. Enjoy the role they play in the development of the skills to draw, to compose, to colour. They’re the perfect tool to learn how to loosen up, to feel free to explore and experiment…

We’ll end with Confidence, Composure & Completion, On our last session you’ll learn how to add the finishing touches. I will give you ideas and notes to take these abilities and knowledge with you. We can incorporate letters, numbers and text, add colour, or shapes, boxes or ephemera to enhance your page design. You’ll be introduced to more shortcuts and skills you need to come home with pages full of your adventures and very special memories.

I invite you to enjoy sharing the freedom of expression, and the honesty of Sketchbooks. They are a place of raw thinking, a subtle acquisition of knowledge and a way to register your world…
